New York Knicks is playing the Mavericks this Sunday with Baron Davis going back on his first action of the season after missing the first 31 games with a herniated disk in his back. The first adjustment for Davis is a much-welcomed one for the 13-year veteran. Jeremy Lin’s surprisingly strong play has stopped all the talk of Davis filling the role of the team’s savior. Before Lin burst on the scene two weeks ago, the Knicks’ playmaking and offense were in such a shambles that Davis was being cast in an almost impossible situation.

To what degree, no one knows. Davis hasn’t played in a game since last April, has never played in Mike D’Antoni's system, and his overall impact has fallen off in the last five seasons, as he went from the Warriors to the Clippers and then spent part of last season with the Cavaliers.

If he is over his back troubles and is motivated to succeed, he is a proven playmaker with 800-plus games of NBA experience, not including 46 postseason games, compared to Lin’s body of work totaling all of eight NBA starts.

Perhaps because Lin has had success for only two weeks and it is expected his play with level off as opponents start to figure him out, D’Antoni left the door open for a change at the position when asked if he saw Lin as his primary point guard.

As he did with Cleveland, Davis will wear No. 85, the highest number in Knicks history.
